Teaching

I teach courses on computer networking and model-based performance and dependability evaluation of computer and communication systems in the B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs for Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telematics and Embedded Systems.

Research and publications

My personal research focuses on model-driven design and implementation of (embedded) computer-communication systems and the evaluation of their performance, dependability and performability

I wrote a textbook on performance evaluation of computer-communication systems (Wiley, 1998), and published 6 conference proceedings (IEEE, Springer) and did put together multi-author books on performability (Wiley, 2001) and on validation of stochastic systems (Springer, 2003). I published around 100 papers in journals and at (full-review) conferences; see DLDB or Google scholar. I have been (TPC) chair of a number of international conferences (TOOLS 2000, PNPM 2001, MMB 2001, QEST 2004, DSN/PDS 2005, PDMC 2006, PDMC 2007), and have been a member of numerous scientific program committees.

About the past…

From October 1995 through December 2002, I have been a C3-professor for Distributed Systems in the Department of Computer Science at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen, Germany. From January 1990 through September 1995, I have been a lecturer at the University of Twente, and in the spring of 1993 I was a visiting scientist in the Teletraffic Research Centre at the University of Adelaide in Australia. I obtained my Ph.D. in 1991 and my M.Sc in 1986, both from the University of Twente.

I was born on September 27, 1964, in Lichtenvoorde, a small town in the mid-eastern part of the Netherlands, famous as the town where composer/dj JunkieXL was born, and now part of the county Oost-Gelre. After having attended primary school, I attended the VWO (gymnasium) in Groenlo, a small city in the near vicinity, the hometown of the famous Grolsch beer (the old name for Groenlo is Grol, thus explaining the name Grolsch). I studied Computer Science at the University of Twente, and did spend my final project year at the University of Dortmund, Germany.
